Supported platforms

Queensland Globe is designed to work on a range of devices including PCs, Apple Macs, tablets, and mobile phones.

The application displays high quality imagery and data is best viewed on computers. The choice of web browser affects the response speed, it is compatible with Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. For best performance Chrome or Edge is recommended.

The Globe is built on ArcGIS API for JavaScript which has specific operating system and browser requirements.

Known limitations

  • For large data downloads use QSpatial catalogue Queensland Globe has limitations to file type, number of features and vertices which ever limit is reached first will set the limit to the data you can download.
  • Feature limit is 1000
  • Vertices limit is 50,000
  • Field properties of exported shapefiles do not always match the source data.
  • Note: if a shapefile comes back with Spatial Reference of null error this may be resolved by including the projection file (.PRJ).
  • If you add layers via a service, they will remain available during the current Queensland Globe session or until you clear you cache.
  • The ellipse shape cannot be resized or rotated.
  • Google street view is not available from a line.
  • Group symbology:
  • If you are creating a group, the name of the group can only be edited when creating it.
  • Labels need to be edited individual, only visibility is controlled by group symbology.
  • TypeError:‘clone’ of null, means the file has no attributes for the geometry.

Improving performance

  • Use recent versions of Google Chrome for the best performance.
  • Ensure your browser is up to date with the latest version.
  • Search for a location or zoom to your area of interest before adding layers.
  • Limit the layers that are active at one time.
  • Remove layers when you are finished using them.
  • Using layers more efficiently means less data requests (usage), and loading speeds will improve.

Import limitations

The following limitations apply to importing supported file types into the Queensland Globe via the Add My Data tool.

Restrictions on file size or data type are defined by the current API version. As these are updated these settings may be subsequent to change.

  • The maximum upload size for shapefiles is now 2 MB and 10 MB for all other supported file types. For more information please refer to generate and analyze.
  • All supported file types can include up to 1000 features but must contain less than 50,000 vertices.

  • Use a subset of the data

If the file contains a large amount of data, consider using a subset of the data for the import. For example, you can import only the data for a specific region or time period, rather than the entire dataset.

    Simplify the data

If the data contains complex features, such as high-resolution images or detailed geometries, try simplifying the data before importing it. This can help reduce the size of the file and make it easier to import.

    File type Limitations
    SHP
    • Imported data is limited to 1000 features, with a maximum file size of 10MB.
    • For files containing polygon or line features there is also a maximum limit of 50,000 vertices.
    • .SHP files (+ auxiliary files) need to be packaged in a .ZIP
    • .SHP files containing 3D features can be imported but will be displayed as 2D features (meaning that they are draped over the terrain when viewed in 3D or 360 mode).
    GPX
    • Imported data is limited to 1000 features, with a maximum file size of 10MB.
    • For files containing polygon or line features there is also a maximum limit of 50,000 vertices.
    KML/KMZ
    • Will not upload embedded files within a .KML or .KMZ
    • Upload a grouping of layers downloaded as a single .KML or .KMZ from Google Earth into Qld Globe is not supported.
    • If each of these groupings are saved as separate .KML or .KMZ files they can be uploaded into Qld Globe individually.
    • Symbology is retained when uploading.
    • 3D features are displayed correctly.
    • Imported data is limited to 1000 features, with a maximum file size of 10MB.
    • For files containing polygon or line features there is also a maximum limit of 50,000 vertices.
    JSON
    • Symbology is not retained when uploading.
    • 3D features are displayed correctly.
    • Imported data is limited to 1000 features, with a maximum file size of 10MB.
    • For files containing polygon or line features there is also a maximum limit of 50,000 vertices.
    JPG
    • Maximum image size is 3.5Mb
    • Must be logged in to upload a .JPG and use the georeferencing tools.
    • Download size is increased by rotating, resizing, or adding control points.
    PNG
    • Maximum image size is 7.0Mb
    • Must be logged in to upload a png image to use the georeferencing tools.
    • Download size is increased by rotating, resizing, or adding control points.
    Georeferenced JPG or PNG (.ZIP)
    • Must be within a .ZIP file that includes the image and the associated world file.
    • Zip file maximum is the jpg 3.5Mb and png 7.0Mb
    • You must be logged into Qld Globe to upload.
